Description: This is an authentic Viet Cong sapper's knife - war veteran bring back weapon. Sappers were Viet Cong special forces/commandos. HISTORY: This knife was recovered by U.S. Air Force Security Police following a stand-off and sapper attack at Cam Ranh Bay Air Base on 30 Aug 1970, approximately 02:19 hrs. In that attack, almost 500,000 gallons of aviation fuel were destroyed by satchel charges and/or the 7 rocket rounds impacting the base that night. The sappers escaped - this knife was found along the base boundary where the perimeter wire was breached. Seller was given this item by a security force team member who recovered it in daylight hours, 8/30/70. Primitive knife, traditionally these weapons were fabricated from U.S. military materials like steel drums or CONEX containers, etc. The handle was likely made from wooden shipping pallet dunnage as the wood does not appear to be native to the area. NOTE: The Vietnamese locals were cleaver at acquiring and recycling anything usable found on the base. There were hundreds of locals who worked on the base by daylight and sympathetic to the VC at night, providing intelligence and useful materials.
