Description: Carol Kessler (1916-2004) was an outsider artist and designer in San Jose, CA for over 60 years. Although mainly self-taught, Carol trained at Stanford University under Anton Refregier. She was the wife of listed artist Friedolin Kessler (1913-1995). She and Friedolin lived their lives centered around the arts, and along with other artists, helped co-found the famed San Jose Art League. Carol was a native Californian, born in Los Gatos, and lived her entire life in the state. She and her husband traveled throughout California, especially appreciating the Sierra Mountains. They also traveled extensively in the Southwest. These travels influenced the imagery and perspective in her artwork. Carol was an adventurous artist both on and off the canvas. She created works in oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, and collage. She had a particular passion for fiber arts and became especially proficient in the demanding and labor-intensive techniques of silk-screening. She created stunning wall hangings, and one-of-a-kind wearable art clothes that were shown in Bay Area art and fashion shows for years.
