Description: Free eBay listing template designed by dewiso.com Antique Monument To The Unknown Dead Of The JohnstownFlood Of 1889 Paperweight This antique paperweight dates from the turn of the century and has a black and white image of the "Monument To The Unknown Dead" of the Johnstown Flood. It is in excellent shape with a crisp image and minimal wear, other than the base paper, which reads "Bogselman & Co 439 Broadway New York. It measures approximately 4 1/4" x 3" and stands an inch tall.Unveiled in 1892, the Monument to the Unknown Dead was the culmination of almost 2 years of planning and preparation for the reinternment of unknown victims of the 1889 Johnstown flood. It was believed that transfer of the bodies of victims would result in some of them being recognized during the burials. Made of Vermont granite, the memorial, designed as a sarcophagus surrounded by three life size statues representing Faith, Hope and Charity, stands 21 feet tall and weighs 35 tons and is located on a 20.000 square foot plot. On October 21, 1889 reinternment began, with funerals being held the victims that were recognized. In 1890 777 white marble markers were sunk into the ground for the remaining unknown victims. On May 31, 1892 Ex Governor Beaver and current Governor Pattison came to Johnstown for the services. A long precession of various prominent residents of Johnstown followed by the Mineral City Band to The Grandview Cemetery, with members of the City Guard standing at attention near the monument, with thousands in attendance. This antique paperweight was most likely made as a souvenir for the event, and is a fascinating glimpse of history of a mostly forgotten American tragedy.
