Gmunden area was the majot faience-producing area The earliest example of Gmunden faience in German museums dates back to 1623, but the records show that as early as 1598 there were already established three pottery shops. The factories in Gmunden area were producing faience ware until mid-1800s. This particular beer stein - brown glaze with religious subject painting - was not very common in 1820s. The brown glaze on faience steins was quite unusual and the Gmunden factory produced a few beer steins with religious subjects.
